Dodo / Guide

Hair dryer sound for baby sleep.

Some babies only settle to the whoosh of a hair dryer. Dodo plays that sound from your iPhone, so no hot appliance has to run near the crib.

Why parents reach for the hair dryer.

Ask a group of tired parents what calms their newborn and someone will say the hair dryer. Others say the fan, the vacuum cleaner or a steady shhh. What these sounds share is that they are even and constant, with no sudden changes.

A real hair dryer is not something you want running next to a crib for half an hour. It gets hot, it is loud close up, and your arm gets tired. Dodo, a baby white noise and sleep sound machine for iPhone, plays the same warm, steady whoosh from a phone you can put down across the room. It is a sound machine for newborns that fits in your pocket.

We cannot promise that any sound will work for your baby. Every baby is different, and a sound is one small part of a calm bedtime routine, next to feeding, a dim room and you.

How to play it in Dodo.

Find Hair Dryer
It sits with the comforting sounds, next to womb sound, heartbeat, gentle shush, box fan, washing machine and vacuum cleaner. Every sound has its own picture, so you find it in the dark without reading a list.
Tap the glowing moon
One tap starts the sound, one tap pauses it. It keeps playing in the background, even with the screen locked.
Pick a timer
15 or 30 minutes are included, with a soft fade at the end. Dodo Lifetime adds 1 hour, 2 hours and until stopped.
Soften it with the sound filter
Off, Calm or Sleep, right on the home screen. Calm and Sleep add a warm bass, which takes the edge off a small phone speaker.
Let the screen rest
Rest mode dims the screen until only the moon glows, so there is no bright light in the nursery.

If the hair dryer is not the one.

Every sound in Dodo rests on a soft bed of brown noise and plays at an even loudness, so switching from one to the next never jolts a sleepy baby. Swipe, and the next sound slides in.

For newborn sleep in the first weeks, many parents start with the gentle shush, the classic shhh, or womb sound. For colic evenings and crying spells they try the hair dryer, the fan, the vacuum or the washing machine hum while they rock and soothe. White noise, pink noise and brown noise are there too, and so are ocean waves and night rain.

The app has 29 baby sleep sounds. 12 are included for everyone, Hair Dryer among them. Dodo Lifetime is a single in-app purchase that unlocks all 29, for good. There is no account and there are no ads. If you came here looking for a white noise baby app, the same 29 sounds cover that too.

Keep it low, keep it away.

Place the phone about 2 m from the crib, at a low volume. Keep the phone and any cables out of the crib.

Dodo is a sound app, not a medical device, and it makes no medical or sleep-outcome claims. Follow the safe-sleep guidance from your local health authority.
