What parents mean by white noise.

Strictly, white noise is a steady hiss with the same energy across all pitches. Pink noise is softer at the top, and brown noise is deeper still, closer to a low rumble. In everyday use, parents call any steady, even sound white noise: a shush, a fan, a hair dryer, rain.

Dodo, a baby white noise and sleep sound machine for iPhone, has all of them in one place. Searching for a white noise baby app usually means you want two things at 3 a.m.: a sound that starts at once, and a screen that stays dark.

One part of a calm routine.

A sound is never the whole answer. Many parents simply play the same sound at the same point each evening, together with feeding, a dim room and a cuddle. We do not promise that it will make your baby sleep longer, and no app honestly can.

Newborn sleep, first weeks
A steady shush or womb sound is where many parents start.
Colic evenings and crying spells
A hair dryer, fan, vacuum or washing machine hum while you rock and soothe.
Contact naps and night feeds
Keep the sound running and the screen dark.
Naps on the go
In the stroller, the car seat or a travel crib. Dodo works offline, so no signal is needed.
Toddler bedtime
Pink noise, ocean waves or sleepy crickets.

Low, far and with a timer if you like.

Put the phone about 2 m from the crib, never inside it, and keep cables out of reach. Start with a low, comfortable volume. A small phone speaker can sound sharp, so Dodo has a sound filter on the home screen: Off, Calm or Sleep. Calm and Sleep add a warm bass.

Every sound rests on a soft bed of brown noise and plays at an even loudness, so switching never jolts a sleepy baby. The sleep timer fades out softly after 15 or 30 minutes. Dodo Lifetime adds 1 hour, 2 hours and until stopped, if you want the sound to keep going.

What Dodo gives you.

29 baby sleep sounds, browsed by picture: womb sound, heartbeat, gentle shush, box fan, hair dryer, washing machine and vacuum cleaner; white, pink, brown and green noise; water, rain and nature. 12 are included for everyone. Dodo Lifetime is a single in-app purchase that unlocks all 29, for good.

One tap on the glowing moon starts or pauses the sound. It keeps playing in the background, even with the screen locked, and rest mode dims the screen until only the moon glows. 15 app languages, no account, no sign-up and no ads.

Keep it low, keep it away.

Place the phone about 2 m from the crib, at a low volume. Keep the phone and any cables out of the crib.

Dodo is a sound app, not a medical device, and it makes no medical or sleep-outcome claims. Follow the safe-sleep guidance from your local health authority.

Questions parents ask.

Which sound should I try first for my newborn?

Many parents start with womb sound or the gentle shush, the classic shhh, and keep the hair dryer, fan or white noise for fussy evenings. When you first open Dodo, it asks what usually calms your baby and plays it right away.

How loud should white noise for a baby be?

Low and comfortable. Place the phone about 2 m from the crib, never inside it, and follow the safe-sleep guidance from your local health authority. If you are unsure about volume, ask your health visitor or doctor.

Should white noise play all night?

That is your choice as a parent. Dodo includes 15 and 30 minute timers with a soft fade. Dodo Lifetime, a single in-app purchase, adds 1 and 2 hour timers and until stopped.

Does Dodo work without internet?

Yes. Every sound lives inside the app, so Dodo works fully offline and keeps playing with the screen locked.

Goodnight, little one.
